The Champagne Edit :: Documentation

Happy!!! Friday!!!

This was a LONG week – from Halloween being on a Tuesday basically made every day feel like a Friday… anyone else?

How was your Halloween?? Erik and I grabbed a drink at our fave Marina bar and went to Tacolicious for their BYO Taco Tuesdays – it was our first time & a BLAST!

They have one of my all time favourite margaritas in the world which we had a fun pitchy-pitcher of there. It’s called Mucho Gusto and it’s tequila + pineapple + coconut water. It is SO good. The extra coconut water will prevent a hangover, #trustme. Hydration FTW!!

{ did one of the ideas from this post }

Hm – what else?

Maybe you noticed, maybe you haven’t but I haven’t been as “active”, per se, on social media and my blog. To transparent, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. I came to the realization that I am not documenting, instead, I am creating and curating. I went back on some of my old posts and even though the photography / editing is AWFUL (LOL), it made me kind of miss my old take on blogging.

I also went through my OLD personal instagram. I am no longer accepting any followers on it {haven’t since 2015 bc it’s just personal}, and I rarely log in it. In fact, Erik unfollowed it by accident and kept asking me to log back in so he can refollow. Well, I finally did like a year later.

And I got to scrolling.

And basically, it was instagram pre-algorithm {SORRY- only time I’ll say that word bc you guys KNOW how I feel about it}. And it was pure documentation.

I get asked why I still even have that account. I haven’t updated it almost 3 years – going on 4. The answer is the same reason why I keep all my old iPhones vs selling it back. It’s old memories, it’s an old photo album.

EVEN MORE, IT’S DOCUMENTATION OF THE MOMENT

I remember getting on that account drunk as a skunk in bars at like 3AM and posting from it. I never once considered timing, posing, etc. It was fun & it was fun to share moments, even if they were blurry.

SO- I’m going to start treating my Instagram & maybe even my blog like it’s 2012 – 2014. All my photos I’ve posted have really been “in the moment”.

Instagram is not chronological anymore, but like many people, I do miss it. I miss the realness of it… so in this insta-filitered world, I’m going to try to do my best to do things less for the gram and more in the moment.

I need to start documenting more and more. Not just for my blog, but I want to be able to look back on my instagram years from now like an old photo album. I want more experiences and memories vs me posing in front a of a brick wall, using photo #77 out of the 100 takes from that one try. At the end of the day, the latter is fake & the former is real.

Anyways, that’s all I got – I hope you guys like it – & don’t get me wrong, there will be some stylized photos, whether it’s a blog post, sponsorship, etc but I want my main content to be real and in the moment going forward & real time.

In fact, I’ve been using this app called Huji and I LOVE it because it adds a throwback instant film date to the photos… which is a fun way IMO to document the exact date. In fact, I’ll do a post on my top 5 film apps in the next week or two. Download Huji here {apple ios only for now}

ALL RIGHT = that was a longer edit than I anticipated! As far as this weekend, tomorrow I am working on back end blog stuff ALLLLLLLL day while Erik golfs. He’s off to Tokyo next week (J.E.A.L.O.U.S. as it’s my fave city) so we are going to stay in every night and cook dinner which I’m looking forward to. Let me know if there’s anything I should make him bring me back – I always ask for matcha 🙂

Be sure to check back this weekend for another VSCO filter break down!

What are you doing this weekend?

+++ Congrats to the HOUSTON ASTROS for winning the World Series. This girl is proud to be a Houstonian.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP W/ ASIAGO + SAGE CROUTONS by WHAT ANNIE’S EATING

Despite SF having a RANDOM heatwave, it’s back to being cold and foggy here… just how I like it. Annie whipped up this amazing soup that just begs you to cozy up with. The Asiago Sage croutons alone sound amazing and would be a fun addition to your holiday stuffing too! PS – Annie is my major food blogger crush, check out her easy & SO good 2 ingredient smoothie here (+ my love note to her).

CRANBERRY GIN COCKTAIL by LAUREN CARIS COOKS

As we get into winter, one of my favourite flavours in the world, especially in my cocktail is cranberry! This cocktail looks delicious and I love how it’s paired with Gin – as it will bring a nice brightness to the tart cranberries! I can’t wait to give this a go. The mint makes it super festive too – cheers!

CONSTELLATION BRANDS GETS IN THE WEEDS

It’s a wild time we live in as we are about to witness one of the biggest repeals of the century. If you aren’t familiar with Constellation brands, they are behind MAJOR alcohol companies (Robert Mondavi, Corona, Svedka.. to name a few), they just acquired a ~10% stake in a cannabis company. They are the first major alcohol manufacturers to invest in cannabis. The cannabis industry is about to evolve in a major way & it’s going to make history.

SILVER SLOUCH BOOTS

I just ordered these boots and I am so STOKED. I’ve wanted them for a long ass time. I think metallic boots are going to be one of the looks of the season. These are just begging to be KiraKira+’ed but all jokes aside, it’s a fun futuristic way to dress up an all black get up. I plan on wearing them with this sweatshirt dress {<< on sale!}. How would you style them??

THE KNOCKS & CAPTAIN CUTS – HOUSE PARTY

If you follow me on Instagram, you KNOW I can’t get enough of this sick track for the past 2 weeks. This track pays homage to their roots & an invitation to ditch the crazy night out for a crazy night… in.  It’s a party track that infuses nu-disco, house with a bit of hip hop. You need it for your weekend vibe tracklist.  Check out their contribution to Genius, explaining the song + lyrics. It’s a fun read. Speaking of 2012 Shannon drunk instagramming with the Nashville filter {MY JAM AT THE TIME }, I can guarantee that every lyric in this track I’ve actually said in the moment, HA! I def hosted my share of after parties back in Dallas. #FLASHBACKFRIDAY 😉

    • HA! Thanks girl – it literally took less than 5 minutes too! Happy Friday 🙂 x

  • I love how candid this post is. It’s so true that we curate nowadays and while that works for my brand specifically, it doesn’t for everyone. And that’s why I love content like yours because it’s so candid. So girl, you rock it like whoa! Who says you can’t have a well edited yet still candid photo?! I say get it.

  • Ahh I couldn’t agree with you more!! Social media is awesome but it doesn’t beat the present moment 💗 Also I love what you said about looking back on memories as opposed to photos of you in front of a brick wall 😂 Thanks for sharing!

  • GIIRRRLLLLL let’s get a PRAISE on revisiting blogging and Insta like it’s 2012-2014!!!! My personal IG is never filtered, it’s of the moment (mostly my kids) and the only IG account (I have 3) that I feel like I’m constantly trying to curate is the one for my blog. I always teeter between wanting to be real, and wanting to do what everyone says brands look for. Just a big ol’ HELL YES to this idea. <3

    I am really new to instagram, just started this year and at this point I feel like it all bloggers liking other bloggers, or accounts using other’s photos to get likes. Maybe you should design a new app that more represents the old instagram!

  • Hey Shannon!!

    First of all, I’m mad as hell that the boots don’t exist in my size (11). Second, I agree with you on the “in the moment” thing. I’ve struggled with it for a while, because- while the pretty posing shots are cool and gorgeous, the idea of an insta with only those feels kinda soulless to me.

    For a while, I posted unedited photos on Sundays, but I had to post three not to mess with the rest of my feed layout, and it felt very constrained so I stopped. I now just go nuts in my stories with whatever I want to capture/share while I figure out how to bring more spontaneity back to my page.

    Great post as usual, and that coconut water margarita has me intrigued! I may have to make the Bart trip to taste it.

    Love how you are going to take a more in the moment approach with your blog and Instagram. You just inspired me to scroll back through my personal one! Such a fun thing to do, so many memories I’ve forgotten about!

  • I’ve been thinking a lot about this topic too after seeing you post about it on Instagram stories. I have been equally frustrated with the direction Instagram is going and have been trying to figure out my place in the debate as well. You definitely gave me a lot to think about…
