{ #JAM }: Phony Ppl – Why iii Love The Moon.

Boy oh boy, am I excited for this one.

As far as my weekend plans, I got nothing. And I like it. I need some time to just chill to myself. In fact, at dinner tonight, Erik & I both looked at each other and asked “can we please not do anything this weekend & stay in?”

Sometimes a weekend of nothing-ness is all you need, especially before Valentine’s. Not to mention, I’ve been really focusing on the direction I want this blog to go, so I need all the time on weekends I can get to plan, shoot, & strategize!

OK so…

Half the reason why I’m being so short is because I am beyond stoked to talk about this song. It is really rocking my world in a major way.

In fact, I’ve wanted to share it for a while, but I decided to wait for Valentine’s Weekend because it’s oh so appropriate.

I stumbled upon Phony Ppl on Spotify a few weeks ago and was left awestruck by them.

They are the perfect mix of classical, to hip hop, to R&B, to jazz. In fact, they are such masters at all, it’s impossible to classify them.

Hailing from Brooklyn, is made up of Elbee Thrie (vocalist), Sheriff Pj (rapper), Elijah Rawk & Bari Bass (guitars), Aja Grant (Keyboards), & Mayy ‘MaffYuu’ Byas on drums. As mentioned earlier, they are impossible to put in one genre, because it really covers it all from classical to jazz, to hiphop, to r&b. It has the hip hop funk with a Sinatra vibe. In fact, they call their genre “No Genre”.

So, for starters, this song is beyond crazy because it was was a total accident, if you will.

Phony Ppl was in the studio just jamming out and shooting the ish. They had zero intention to make a song… Well, unbeknownst to them, the record button was on!

& a beautiful accident it was indeed.

It’s a song, that even though you may not have ever heard of before, you instantly recognize it.

The song itself is truly brilliant, especially the lyrics. As the title states, it’s an ode to the moon.

A lunar love song.

It;s about being down and out from love, but falling in love with the constant of the moon. It’s the one constant when life and love can be everything but.

It’s brilliant because it is one that everyone who has ever lived can relate to it. I doubt there is one person out there that hasn’t looked outside and admired the moon from their window when life was… well, life. The moon is one thing both you & I could always count on every single night.

After the jazz part fades out it goes straight into the funky hip hop. His rhymes are seriously phenomenal & starts to dig deeper. The moon is a source of light while dealing with demons in the dark {a result from heartbreak}. Read them here on good ole genius, but trust when I say it’s worth the read.

Then it ends with the best lyrics a song could ever end with:

“PEACE TO THE MOON,
PEACE TO THE STARS,
PEACE TO SATURN,
PEACE TO MARS”

… and that’s when the piano & percussion hits. You are immediately transported back to a smoky sexy jazz lounge as it finishes incredibly on the piano for the last 2 minutes as it lullabies into a finish.

I say this about every song I post on Fridays that it leaves you wanting more. This jam is no exception.

I’m obsessed and I’ve had it on repeat all month.

Give it a listen, you won’t regret it. This is one song that truly gets more incredible upon each listen. Like this song, this song, & this song, it transitions seamlessly from genre to genre.

Let me know what you think – I really just can’t get enough. It’s a showstopper of a tune that stopped me in my tracks upon first listen.

Any weekend plans?? Songs I should check out? Let me know. Happy Friday!

Gazing out my window,
Shannon
