One thing I am really lucky for at my full-time job is that the people I work with are just as health conscious as {or maybe even more than} me. It is not uncommon to talk what health trends we are on, to grab cold-pressed juices, or share recipes – in fact, I get so much inspiration from simply going to work!

I happened to be in the office kitchen talking to my friend & colleague, Elisse {who, btw, is so legit – she is a certified Health & Wellness coach and has her blog in the works – you will want to follow her when she launches – stay tuned}, and we were talking sweet potatoes. You know, normal conversations. I told her I really had no idea how to even start to cook them and she mentioned that she likes hers with chili powder and crushed chili flakes. Yup. My jaw was pretty much on the ground, and drooling. So hot, I know, but she completely nailed it with the smoky + sweet flavour combination & we are both fiends for anything spicy.

I could NOT wait to get home so I could make these!

Not even kidding, they were so good that I ate the entire tray.

First, I set my oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit  and peeled the sweet potatoes and then cut them into small cubes. This is optional, but I took some garlic, smashed it, and rubbed them on a sheet pan for extra flavour, then, I put the sweet potatoes on the pan.

I LOVE Williams-Sonoma’s GoldTouch line. Seriously. All my baking pans are this line {I like to take advantage of their sets}. Not only are they beautiful, but they are coated with their gold ceramic coating which, according to their website “makes them more resistant to abrasion than normal non-stick surfaces and releases food with ease”. PS – they are also a favourite with America’s Test Kitchen and we ALL KNOW how much I LOVE America’s Test Kitchen.

{ TIP: } Quarter sheet pans are perfect for cooking for one or two! They are also wonderful for multi-tasking in the kitchen. I rarely use my full or half sheet pans.

Then I drizzled olive oil, & chili pepper on them and gave it a nice shake to make sure all were coated. The garlic will also cook and get really soft, but it also will give a nice kiss of flavour. You can eat the garlic – I did! – or discard. Then, I coated the sweet potatoes with even more chili powder and chili flakes, gave a final shake, and put them into the oven.

Depending on your oven, you will want to cook them between 35-45 minutes. I did the full time and noticed once they hit the 40 minute mark, they really started to caramelize on the sides and gave a really lovely texture – think soft sweet potatoes with a nice crisp exterior.

I served mine with lemon slices and squeezed them to finish, which added even more dimension to the sweet potatoes. As mentioned in my food diary, I enjoyed these with some spa chicken & raw spinach.

Super easy to make for one or two or even more – just plan on using one potato per person!

Smoky + Spicy Sweet Potatoes à la Elisse

Ingredients :

– Sweet Potatoes
– Olive Oil
– Chili Powder
– Chili Flakes
– Pepper

Optional :

– Garlic Cloves
– Lemon

:: In ratio ::
1 potato : spices according to taste

Recipe :

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Meanwhile, peel the sweet potatoes and dice into small cubes.
  3. Place sweet potatoes in sheet pan and drizzle with olive oil.  Add chili powder, chili flakes, salt & pepper. Shake so all potatoes are covered.
    ›› Optional: Smash garlic cloves  & rub on pan prior to putting the sweet potatoes on it
  4.  Place in oven on the middle rack & cook until roasted. ~45 minutes
    ›› Optional: Drizzle a bit more oil and add more seasonings  – what can I say, I’m a flavour whore
  5. Serve as desired! I like to squeeze lemon on them!
