the 411 on CBD :: spoiler alert, I’m obsessed

This post has been a long one in the making.

A big goal of my blog is to lift the curtain on cannabis to fulfill an even bigger goal of mine which is breaking the stigma of cannabis use.

The biggest way to break any stigma is to share stories & knowledge…

…which is one of my favourite parts of the internet as a whole. Through technology, it connects us all to tell our stories and allows us to empathize.

SO- Today starts the full on cannabis discussion.

& not going to lie, I am straight stoked as it’s something I’ve been wanting to talk about for a good while… & I’m pretty vocal about on instagram so it’s time to bring it to the blog. And I’ll be totally blunt… no pun intended. 😉 so let’s get into it, shall we?!

I figure the best way to introduce this is something I’ve been asked a TON about :: CBD

… or officially known as cannabinoids :: note that it is not an acronym!

For starters, cannabinoids {or CBD} are a non-psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant, chock full of medical benefits. To make it even better, some of the hugely concentrated oils of CBD contain omega-3 fatty acids, terpenes, vitamins, chlorophyll, amino acids, and other antioxidants.

Since it’s not psychoactive, it won’t make you feel “high” or “stoned”. In fact, it can actually help counteract the psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol {or THC} which is what makes you feel high. There are some strains out there that can actually make you feel anxious, so this is a great way to balance out that “anxiety high”.

In fact, I love this description from this Leafly article  :: “Project CBD, an organization dedicated to the dissemination of CBD information, has compared the chemical to a ‘dimmer switch’” It has a way of calming excess signaling and activity in the brain’s endocannabinoid system.”

The benefit for the mind is, hands down, the biggest one for me.

In fact, the below strain makes me feel just… clear?… if that makes sense.

Okay, so, it doesn’t get you stoned… so why should you take it?!

Glad you asked.

It’s one gem of a compound that can help treat & provide relief for anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain, inflammation, MS, alcoholism, nausea diabetes, cigarette addiction, acne, schizophernia, chron’s disease, insomnia… seriously, the options are endless. It is very safe to use, even at high doses.

It should also be noted that many of this scientific research has been backed and sponsored by the US government. Personally, I strongly believe that the cure to cancer will be found in the cannabis plant. I’ve said it here too… & here.

I’ve mentioned it briefly here, but I deal with hardcore anxiety among other things including insomnia, depression, PTSD, & to be completely vulnerable, BDD.

I’ve literally stopped panic attacks in their tracks thanks to CBD.

I also love to take some CBD right before a social outing to help me feel more at peace. If I do THC, it can actually make me feel a little MORE anxious/paranoid for social outings!

Also, I’ve talked about how I was dealing with SEVERE swelling out of nowhere a few weeks ago. Turns out, I had an infection on my face that was an allergic reaction to an anti-aging mask {I was allergic to one of the ingredients without knowing it}. WELL, the right side of my face & lymph nodes completely swelled up & were so tender to the touch. Not only did I not look like myself, but I could feel the pain and the tension in my neck & jaw. CBD not only helped me fight the inflammation, but it was a major pain reliever. I truly do not think I would of healed as fast as I did without CBD.

Now… how do you take it?!

Honestly, the options are endless: you can smoke the flowers, vape it {my personal favourite way because I love to microdose – I like this 3:1 cartridge & this 1:1 cartridge – the ratio is CBD : THC. The 1:1 will be slightly psychoactive}, mix it with essential oils & inhale {HUGE POST ON THIS COMING SOON}, use it topically in a balm, soak in it with infused bath salts}, eat it. The choice is yours.

As far as eating it,  my all time favourite CBD products are these CBD mints from Breez. These are a must before any flight. In fact, thanks to this, I didn’t experience any jet lag on our flight back from Paris. I also love the Kiva Espresso chocolate bar! Not only is it delicious, but it seriously just makes you feel damn good.

In fact, someone on instagram sent me a photo of CBD infused water. LOVE everything about this. I will 100% bring this to the blog very soon with my own spin to the recipe but all you need to do is add a drop or two from a water-soluble tincture to water.

  • Tried cannabis for the first time last year. Smoked it, didn’t enjoy it. Then a friend of mine suggested edibles. I much prefer those. And a couple of months ago, the same friend (she’s a chef) introduced me to infused food and drinks. Much better intake.

    Thank you for this article! I recently discovered CBD. I was having chronic pain from arthritis and tendinitis. I tried the chocolate edibles by Kiva and I love them! I was able to figure out my dosage pretty quickly. Then I bought some CBD drops by Care By Design. I love these drops. 18:1 I know what you mean about just feeling clear and or more focused. I am really interested in this subject as well and I have been researching it more. It helps me to relax as well. The THC from the chocolate helps me with my insomnia so that I can relax and fall asleep. PS I have not really been a cannabis user since high school and I’m over 50. I completely support the industry and I have experienced my own personal health and wellness from it. I am sleeping much better and I am experiencing way less pain and inflammation!

I love that the health benefits of cannabis use are being more & more well-known vs using it to get high.
