I am SO, so, so excited for this interview.

Recently, a hot new app called Springpop launched.

I actually read about it about a year ago and it sounded right up my alley. I actually signed up to be on the waiting list & I got my notification on June 1st!

Think Pinterest, minus the clutter, but with a major personal touch, and totally tailored to #girlbosses + positivity.

Think logging in and seeing hot new fashion with easy links to purchase, inspiring quotes, interesting blog posts, and healthy living tips. Not to mention, posters can only post 5x a day, which guarantees a CLEAN layout, minimizes spam (how annoying are those unless pinterest links?! ugh), and keeps things fresh

It’s all geared around empowering women everywhere and staying positive! Two VERY important things in my book.

I will absolutely be sharing my posts, as well as some finds, business advice, and healthy living tips there so feel free to track me on it!

It’s been a new, welcome addition to my mornings on the commute to work & I love putting in the thought on WHAT to post about!

I’ve been in contact with the founder, Alexandra Pierson since & I had to know everything! I wanted to know where she came up with the idea, her social media tips, and just straight up internet advice.

She is incredibly wise beyond her years, and I mean it sincerely when I say I really gathered a lot out of her interview and will absolutely apply her advice as I ramp things up on the blog. Seriously, it’s amazing everything she did at her age.

I am also beyond stoked for her to visit San Francisco as she works on her app for much needed business talks over champagne!

⚜ Introduce yourself

My name is Alexandra Pierson, and I’m going to be a senior at The University of Pennsylvania.

I’m the founder of Springpop, and we just released our app in the App Store June 1st! Springpop is a social media app like Pinterest, but with more positivity and without the clutter.

⚜ You just launched a killer app – Congrats! Tell us about your Springpop story & how it came to be!

I started working on Springpop over two years ago, at the end of my freshman year. I was inspired by a marketing class I took at Wharton, and wanted to create a brand like the ones I was learning about.

For years I had been looking for a place where I could browse my interests, and the only place I could find was Pinterest. For me, Pinterest was too overwhelming, and I didn’t like the lack of focus on the people creating the content. How did I know that the pasta recipe I saw would actually be good?

I wanted to know more about the people behind the posts.

Most of all, I wanted a place where I could customize my feed, could always find great posts even if I only had five minutes to explore, and that would leave me in a good mood after I visited. I couldn’t find one, so I made my own. Springpop started off as an invitation-only site a year ago, and now it’s a free app you can download!

⚜ What are your short-term and long-term goals?

My short-term goal is to get as many people to download the app as possible. I spent a long time (almost a year) designing and tweaking the app to ensure it had features people would be excited about. Now I’m just eager to have people using those features and seeing what we’ve created. Another short-term goal of mine is to boost people’s moods. We all know that seeing a positive quote can make our day a little brighter, so Springpop sends you a friendly push notification each morning, directing you to the app where you will find 5 motivational posts waiting.

My long-term goal is to create a sustainable brand. I want Springpop to represent positivity and happiness. In this way, beyond trying to make people’s day a little brighter, I want to give back in any way I can. I think social responsibility will be a huge part of the brand in the future.

⚜ Tell us about going to school full time while building a brand on the side. 

I’ve been in college the entire time I’ve been working on and building Springpop. Doing school and Springpop at the same time is definitely difficult since both things regularly have hard deadlines. For example, I would have two papers and an exam the same day I needed to have the app designs finalized.

Planning ahead and keeping an organized Google Calendar helped me juggle everything.

If I knew I had an exam in two weeks I would start studying well in advance, just in case something with Springpop came up. Beyond deadlines, balancing school and Springpop wasn’t as difficult as I would have imagined it to be.

I’m lucky that I love working on Springpop and truly believe in the company, so working has never felt like a chore. Springpop became what I did in my “free time,” and it ate up a lot of my social time, but I never dreaded doing work for my startup.

 What is your advice to others working a corporate job or going to school full time with dreams of starting their own business? 

My advice to anyone wanting to start a company while in school would be don’t do it unless you truly believe and love whatever project you are starting. If you want to start something just to have a company, you’ll end up bitter and won’t want to do the work required to build a business while being a student.

Sacrificing a lot of your social life also won’t feel worth it.

I decided to pursue Springpop because I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and I knew I wouldn’t be happy until I just gave it a try. If you do decide to launch a company while in college (good for you!), I would recommend you find co-founders.

I started Springpop by myself, and I’m sure the journey would have been a lot smoother with more people by my side.

#GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso is a favorite of mine. I love reading about women’s journeys in the startup world.

⚜ Biggest Beauty Secret? Spill!

This might not be a secret, but I swear by drinking hot water with freshly squeezed lemon every morning. I drink it before I consume anything else, and it makes me feel more awake, hydrates me, and (best of all) has made my skin clearer and brighter.

⚜ Who or what inspires you or where do you find inspiration?

My twin sister inspires me. She, also,  has a startup (a daily email newsletter called The Newsette), and is constantly giving me great ideas.

I also find a lot of inspiration from around the web, which I will then post on my Springpop profile. Springpop Posters can post what they are “seeing” by pasting an article into the app.

My goal is to make Springpop a place where users can look to for inspiration since a lot of our Posters find great articles and tips from around the web!

⚜ What are some of the challenges in your field and how do you handle them?

I think a big challenge people talk about is the unfair treatment of women in the tech world. A lot of people discuss the fact that women founders are less likely to raise capital.

This doesn’t necessarily feel like a challenge to me, as I’ve never experienced any barriers to getting funding, but my goal is to create a company so good that being a woman, or whatever else, doesn’t really matter. {<<<THIS.}

 How did you know you were onto something special!

I think I knew I was onto something special when people’s faces would light up after seeing the app for the first time. This was very rewarding for me to see, because I recognize the expression as someone seeing something new, unique, and fun.

⚜ Looking back, if you could do anything differently in building your brand, what would it be?

I definitely made a lot of mistakes along the way, but it’s all part of the process. If I could do anything differently, it would be to hire interns earlier. My sister has five interns right now, and I have seen the benefits of having hard-working and intelligent women on your team! I’m currently looking for interns, so contact us if you are interested!

⚜ Currently, what is your favourite social media outlet? Any social media tips?

I really love Snapchat, because it makes it so easy to get a peek into someone’s life. I like following bloggers on Snapchat, because they always have great outfits on!

My social media tips for any platform, including blogging, would be to make sure your graphics look great.

Canva is an incredible tool for anyone who isn’t great at design. You can whip up a great cover photo or post in minutes. I would also recommend posting regularly. It’s easy to abandon one of your social channels for a while, but when you come back you’ll find you have a lot less engagement than before. Try to post at least every few days.

⚜ What is next for you?

I will be in NYC this week taking deskside appointments with magazine editors! I’m meeting with some big publications that I’ve loved for years, so I’m really excited to tell them more about Springpop.

After that, I’ll be in San Francisco for a while, continuing to work on the Springpop app.

⚜ How do you see social media / blogs / apps evolving and how do you plan to evolve with it?

I see social media relying less and less on likes and followers. {<<< I agree with this 100%} I’ve always thought likes are a very surface-level measurement of content quality. Instagram has started to see this too, and has recently started displaying video views instead of likes, since views are clearly a better representative of how popular the video is.

Springpop has taken this a step further, and ranks posts based on a variety of actions such as how many saves it has gotten, how many clicks, how many shares, etc. This is all weighed differently, and ends up being a holistic measurement of popularity. Posters are similarly ranked.

The fact that you can’t see how many followers you have on Springpop means Posters have to focus on the quality of their content, which I think is a better system.

⚜ What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

One of the best things I’ve heard is that an overnight success is years in the making. If Springpop were to become super popular in the next year, I think a lot of people would see it as an overnight success, when I’ve really been working on this company for over two years already.

Any “overnight success” has had years of blood, sweat, and tears before they reached greatness.

⚜ Finally, advice for others who are looking to follow their dreams, but not sure how?

My advice is to find something you are truly passionate about, and to go for it. If you really believe in something, you will work harder than anyone else at it, and you won’t regret having pursued it if things don’t work out the way you wanted them to.

No matter what your dream is, I would recommend doing research. Google your competitors’ history if you are building a product, or read about other people’s experiences doing what you want to do.

The best advice I can give is that if you can learn from people’s mistakes, your own road will be a lot less bumpy.
